John Berger is one of my favorite thinkers of the image. His book Ways of Seeing is the foundation of many visual arts and film practitioners and is a boko one always returns to along an artistic career. The book was made into a BBC series in 1972, and the material is very interesting to watch, not only to hear Berger speak, but also in terms of documentary culture in the 70s.
